Registration Questions

Specific Instructions for signing up online!

Question: How does the League choose which Division a child will play?

Answer: Starting with the 2020-2021 season, players should directly register in the division appropriate for the specified gender and age range.

Question: My child will turn nine just two weeks after the beginning of the season and I would like him to play with nine year olds instead of eight year olds.  Is that possible?

Answer: Potentially.  During registration, you must choose the division specific to the player's age at the beginning of the season (actual date is specified on signup control- January 2nd for 2020-2021 season).  However, if you want the player to play in the next division level up, please send an email to hoops@sdcbl.org asking to play-up after registering in the age-appropriate division.  The board takes each request on a case-by-case basis.

Question:  Your site allows a registrant to invite others to play in the League.  Does the League honor requests to have friends play together?

Answer:  No, the League does not honor requests for friends to play together.  While the ability to invite friends is a great way to notify friends of the opportunity to play in the League together, it will not necessarily be on the same team.  We do attempt to keep siblings together that are assigned to the same Division (unless otherwise instructed).  This is a feature we cannot turn off on our site and would if possible, just to eliminate confusion.

Question:  I think I registered online, but I'm not sure.  Is there a way to be sure?

Answer:  Online registration requires payment via PayPal.  It will also create a separate user account specific to each child (even siblings).  While it's possible to create an account for a child without registering for a season, it should be clear on the child's account homepage as to whether the child is registered for the upcoming season.  Additionally, if you successfully register online for the season, you will receive a separate confirmation directly from PayPal for payment received.

Question:  I have registered online previously.  Can I reuse that existing account, or must I create a new account?

Answer:  You can, and absolutely should, reuse your existing account.   By reusing your existing account, you only need to update your answers from the prior season(s) and then pay the registration fee.  Much, much easier and also provides the opportunity to review stats from prior seasons.

Question:  I accidently specified the wrong shirt size when I registered my child.  Can I change that?

Answer: If you registered online, you can log in with the individual player's account and adjust the shirt size.  If you do not have an online account for the player, you will need to contact us regarding the change.  All changes must be completed prior to jerseys being ordered.  There is a deadline for around changing the jersey size and it will vary each season.

Question: My child either does not or cannot play any longer.  Can I get a refund?

Answer: All refund requests will be honored up through the first week of practice.  Once the second week of practice has started, we will no longer issue any refunds.  Once we have a complete roster for a division, we start the process of ordering jerseys, drafting teams, and other steps that result in "sunk" costs for each player.

Team Placement Questions

Question: How are the divisions formed?
Answer:  The goal is to create an even number of teams of an appropriate size to allow every child to play a lot of minutes.  With that in mind, we wait until after registration is over to see how many players we have and at what ages in order to properly break out the divisions and the number of teams in each division.  The divisions are usually in groups of two years (ie, 5/6 year olds, 7/8, etc)- especially for the younger players.

Question:  How are players placed on teams?

Answer:  Children ages 5 and 6 are randomly placed on teams as we do not have enough information to conduct a meaningful draft for that Division.  For every other Division, a Team Draft is held in which players are selected for each Coach's team.  The exception to this rule is that a Coach has the opportunity to coach their own children.  Siblings are kept together as well.

Question:  Can my child play for a specific coach?

Answer:  As with teammate requests, we do not honor requests to play for a specific coachIf a player chooses to not play, and the refund deadline has passed, no refund will be issued.

Question:  When do coaches first contact their Team?

Answer:  Coaches will not know their rosters until after the Team Draft and won't know practice times until after the Coach's Clinic.  After having both their team and practice time, coaches are directed to reach out to their team as quickly as possible.

Question:  What days and times are practices?

Answer: Each team will hold practice once a week and are 1.5 hours in length.  Practices times are offered every day of the week except Saturday and Wednesday.  During the week, practices start shortly after school and go until 9pm in most locations.  On Sundays, practices are in the early to mid-afternoon and only in limited locations.  Here's an example practice schedule you can download.

Question:  How is a Team's practice location and time determined?

Answer:  The SDCBL has just enough available locations and times for all of our Teams.  Practice locations and times are chosen by the coaches, during the Coach's Clinic.  Preference is given to coaches in the following order: (1) Board members serving as coaches that also have to open or close a gym, (2) coaches having multiple teams, and then (3) the remaining coaches in order of player age (youngest first).

Question: My child will be unable to make practice due to its location or time.  Can they be traded to another team?

Answer:

Unfortunately, we cannot honor requests to initiate trades due to the inability to make the scheduled practice for your team.  We make every effort to create even teams both in skill level and number of players during the team selection process.  After choosing their practice times and getting their rosters for the first time, coaches have a roughly a week to contact their players before practices start.  Once the coaches start contacting their team, it becomes extremely difficult to make trades while maintaining fair teams.  A trade also requires a player on the other team going the other way and it's likely that they have already been contacted with their practice time and have made the appropriate arrangements to attend that day and time.  If a player chooses to not play, and the refund deadline has passed, no refund will be issued.
